The April 3rd Spring Series event was anoter wet day for the boys. At the event were Ray Alba, Lane Herrick and Ruo Chan Yang to represent the Hell's Kitchen Men. As soon as the race started, Ruo decided to test his legs and the field and took an early lead. As the race field progressed to the famous Prospect Park Hill, Ray Alba decided to jump the field to catch Ruo to see if the Hell's boys could start a breakaway.
The breakaway attempt failed as Ray Alba noticed that his rear wheel was totally flat. Ruo acting as a great teammate sacrificed his rear wheel and gave it to Ray as the field quickly past them. Rushing to get the wheel on, Ray knew that he had to expend a great deal of energy to bridge the field that was more than 1 minute up the road. Lane, was trying all he could to slow the field down and within 1 lap, Ray Alba bridged up to the field and decided to attack right away.
The race re-grouped with Ray and Lane in the action, covering nearly every breakaway attempt. One rider however did get away and managed to keep a 25 second margin from the field.
With 5 laps to go, Ray waited for the Prospect Park Hill to turn on his power to get away. In this effort Ray managed to take a couple of riders ironically from the same team as the lone rider up the road. Lane, was a marked man the entire race and felt that rather than bridge the breakaway and miss a team placing, he would sit back and slow down the field. Quickly the break with Ray bridged the lone rider and started to gain time on the field. With 2 laps to go, the breakaway had 45 seconds on the field and the group knew this was the winning break. Unfortunately the lone rider the group bridged flatted, however, this mishap guaranteed Ray Alba at least a place on the podium.
On the last lap going up the final hill, Ray's gearing had slipped and this mishap caused him to fall off the pace. Unfortunately Ray did not get the win but, he was more than happy with his 3rd place finish. Next time he will go for the win.
